Media Culture and Society

This course examines the relationships between media, culture, and power in modern societies. How does media shape society and how does society, in turn, shape media? We discuss the definitions of media and culture, and look at theories in media studies and communication. The course applies those ideas to contemporary issues, including surveillance, gender, race, social media, the prevalence of conspiracy theories, and fake news.
